Some of America’s top Black civil rights advocates, journalists, and elected officials have joined forces for a 24-hour livestream, "State of the People," as a protest against President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on March 4. The livestream, which began at 11:59 p.m. ET on March 3 and will end at 11:59 p.m. ET on the night of the speech, is an alternative to the traditional State of the Union address.
The strong lineup of speakers includes MSNBC’s Joy Reid, whose show "The Reid Out" was recently canceled, sparking outrage from fans and the Black community; Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney; and Reps. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and James E. Clyburn (D-SC). Additionally, Arian Simon, CEO and founding partner of the Fearless Fund, will participate, bringing her expertise in social justice and activism.
The State of the People event aims to provide an alternative voice and perspective, promoting unity and understanding, and amplifying marginalized communities. With this livestream, the organizers hope to create a platform for voices that are often overlooked or marginalized. The event is a testament to the power of unity and collectivism, as individuals from various backgrounds come together to raise their voices and demand change.
As the State of the Union address is a major event in American politics, the "State of the People" livestream is a powerful response, offering a platform for marginalized voices to be heard. By ignoring the traditional format of the State of the Union address, this event is taking a bold step towards inclusivity, challenging the status quo, and promoting systemic change.
